Cameroon – USA Cooperation: A member of the American Congress warns Paul BIYA

Are we leading to a reduction of the military aid of the United States in Cameroon? This is in any case what suggests a request that just launched a member of the US Congress in the United States.

Donald Payne, a Representative of the American Executive, demands from the US Congress the opening of an investigation into the military aid in Cameroon “following the flagrant violations of human rights” in the country.

In a note to the US Congress, Donald Payne – New Jersey State Representative – invited the Capitol to open an inquiry into the Cameroon security forces. The investigation should focus on BIR elements who according tothe member of Congress, allegedly torture and commit massive human rights violations.

“In a recent report, Amnesty International reported on dozens of cases of torture in Cameroon’s military bases in 2014 and 2015 as part of an operation to combat Boko-Haram (…) as well as cases of domestic violence, Western Cameroon, where the government targeted Anglophone protesters, “writes Donald Payne to justify his request.

This is not the first time that an American authority has attacked the regime of Paul Biya. Last March, it was André Carson, a US MP who put the Cameroonian government on guard against its management of the anglophone crisis in the country.

“I call on President Biya and the Government of Cameroon to alleviate the tensions before the situation deteriorates further,” the MP said.

Military cooperation between Cameroon and the United States, which was reinforced with the first attacks of Boko Haram in the north of the country, could therefore be called into question if Donald Payne’s request found a favorable echo with the US Congress .
