Manchester United leads Forbes’ list of most valuable soccer teams in 2017
Manchester United seized the top spot on Forbes’ annual list of the
world’s most valuable soccer teams, financially outpacing Barcelona and
Real Madrid with an estimated value of $3.69 billion.
The team’s ascension to the top spot is a product of a “powerful brand and marketing acumen,” according to Forbes. Real Madrid, which was No. 1 for the past four years, fell to No. 3 with a $3.58 billion value.
Manchester United’s generated revenue toppled second-place Barcelona ($3.64 billion value) by $77 million
.
United is out front when it comes to profit, too. The club has an operating income of $288 million, which is $107 million more than runner-up Madrid.
Rounding out the top five on Forbes’ list of the 20 most valuable teams is Bayern Munich ($2.71 billion) in fourth and Manchester City ($2.08 billion) in fifth. As a whole, the 20 teams’ worth went up 3% from last year, although technically nine of the 20 declined due to the value of the U.S. dollar rising.
